Exploring the power of generative AI for enhancing CX

Customer experience is the new marketing battlefront. Chris Pemberton

Out for a stroll, my friend and I came across the IKEA on wheels bus stationed in our neighbourhood. Spontaneously, she exclaimed, “Have you visited the new IKEA showroom? I highly suggest you do. We had an incredible time there.” She raved about the AI chat assistant helping her design her dream kitchen in minutes. She also sheepishly added that she ended up spending more than she had planned.
Coincidentally, I had heard a similar review of IKEA from another source. IKEA, it seems, has mastered the customer experience approach.
Customer experience is the sum of all interactions a customer has with a brand, from discovering a product to using it and seeking support. In today's competitive landscape, where customers expect seamless experiences and instant gratification, customer experience has become the key to winning loyalty and trust. This is where generative AI enters as a transformative technology.
Unlike traditional artificial intelligence, generative AI continuously learns and adapts, improving even familiar features. Imagine browsing an online store where the search bar anticipates your needs, product descriptions adapt to your language preferences, and the checkout process becomes smooth with predictive autocomplete. Generative AI can personalise every interaction, making the experience faster, smarter, and more intuitive.
With sixty percent of customer experience leaders expecting generative AI to become a transformative force and ninety six percent of executives discussing it in leadership meetings, it is clear that this technology will reshape how customers interact with brands.
But how exactly will generative AI enhance customer experience?

Product recommendations
Imagine having an invisible shopping assistant that suggests products based on current trends, customer behaviour, and your individual preferences. Recommendation engines analyse popular items, browsing activity, purchase history, and contextual signals to deliver personalised suggestions that improve engagement and conversions.
Earlier recommendation systems relied on simple heuristics such as identifying products that often appeared together in shopping carts. While easy to implement, these systems struggled to recommend newly introduced products.
Artificial intelligence has significantly enhanced recommendation engines by analysing deeper behavioural patterns and providing more accurate product suggestions. These systems can recommend the next best product for a customer.
Online retail platforms such as Amazon rely heavily on AI driven recommendation systems, which contribute significantly to their total sales.

Elevated visual search
Visual search powered by generative AI allows customers to discover products through images instead of text queries. Rather than typing detailed descriptions, customers can simply upload a picture to find similar products. This approach makes online shopping more intuitive and engaging.

Virtual try ons
Retail brands are increasingly using generative AI and augmented reality to enable virtual product experiences. For example, beauty retailers offer virtual try on tools that allow customers to preview how makeup products such as lipstick, foundation, or eyeshadow may appear on their faces before making a purchase.
This interactive experience not only improves customer confidence but also increases satisfaction during the buying journey.

Enhanced customer support
Intelligent chatbots and virtual assistants powered by generative AI are transforming customer support. Customers can receive instant responses without long waiting times.
These AI driven assistants learn from customer interactions and provide relevant solutions at any time. Surveys indicate that many organisations believe generative AI will significantly improve automated customer service by making it faster and more effective.
Virtual assistants can also guide customers through complex processes step by step, providing clear and supportive instructions.
With generative AI, customer support becomes not only efficient but also more personalised and responsive.

Dynamic advertising copy
Traditional advertising often relied on a single version of promotional content for all audiences. Generative AI now allows organisations to create multiple variations of advertising messages tailored to different audiences.
Modern advertising platforms can automatically generate and test different combinations of headlines and descriptions, helping marketers deliver more relevant content that improves engagement and conversion rates.

Dynamic content generation
Generative AI is also transforming how e commerce content is created. Businesses can automatically generate product descriptions, marketing copy, and personalised recommendations at scale.
Large retailers managing extensive product catalogues use AI tools to produce high quality descriptions that maintain brand voice while ensuring factual accuracy. This approach improves catalogue consistency while also enhancing customer satisfaction and conversion performance.
